Yoke Type vs. Stud Type: What’s the Difference?

When designing a linear guidance system, engineers must choose between yoke type and stud type rollers:

Yoke Type Track Rollers: Designed to be straddle-mounted on a shaft or pin (supported on both sides by a clevis or bracket). This double-support mounting handles heavier loads and prevents the bending stresses associated with cantilevered designs.
Stud Type (Cam Followers): Have an integrated threaded solid stud for cantilever mounting (supported on one side only).

Crowned vs. Cylindrical Outer Ring Profiles

Misalignment between the roller and the track is common in industrial environments, leading to damaging edge stresses and premature failure.
ZMS track rollers are available with a crowned (convex) outer ring profile (often indicated by an “R” suffix). This crowning compensates for minor misalignments, distributes the load evenly across the rolling elements, and significantly extends the service life of both the bearing and the track. Why is my track roller outer ring chipping at the edges?

This is typically caused by edge loading due to track misalignment. Replacing a cylindrical (flat) track roller with a crowned (convex) ZMS track roller will relieve the edge stress and prevent chipping.
